Join us July 19-20, 2019 for our third event. We're bringing together a diverse group of postdocs and doctoral graduate students for professional development, research presentations, and recruiting. DiverseScholar's postdoc participants are members of our Doctoral Directory CV database. Attendees will be preparing elements of their job application in anticipation of the Fall faculty marketing season (see advertisement rates). Announcing Plenary Speaker Dione Lee Rossiter, PhD!

Dione Lee Rossiter headshotWe're happy to announce that our Saturday plenary speaker is science communication expert, Dr. Dione Lee Rossiter speaking on Using SciComm Skills to Achieve STEM Diversity. She is a Science Communication, Engagement, and Outreach Specialist who has previously worked with non-profits, universities, government offices, and for-profit businesses to improve their science engagement efforts. In addition to her engagement work, she is an Adjunct Professor in the Meteorology & Climate Science Department at San Jose State University. Dr. Rossiter’s previous positions include: Climate Specialist for the County of San Mateo, helping the County communicate the risks of climate change and engage stakeholders around climate change solutions; Scientific Programs & Outreach Manager at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC, providing independent leadership of science programs, outreach, and initiatives intended to broaden the reach of scientific research within and outside of the institution; and at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as the Director of the AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows Program, a 45-year-old Fellowship that places scientists in news outlets across the country to work as science reporters. Rossiter received her PhD in Atmospheric Science within the Earth & Planetary Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. While a graduate student, she worked with the Division of Graduate Studies to create university initiatives that would address the lack of diversity amongst the graduate population.

Registration for Postdocs and PhD Graduate Students*

PhD trainee attendees will be drawn from existing members of the following:

  • DiverseScholar Doctoral Directory: instructions in spring/summer email newsletters
  • MinorityPostdoc email list: instructions to join Doctoral Directory in spring/summer newsletters

Partial conference expenses (registration, airfare, and lodging if needed) will be covered for select PhD trainee attendees. However, funding and space are limited so please register early!

If space permits, registration will be open to all postdocs and PhD graduate students in early July. Such PhD trainee registrants will be expected to pay a discounted registration fee to offset the costs of breakfast/lunch meals as well as onsite parking.

*Note that due to limited funds, the dinners are only for select PhD trainees, registered professionals, and invited guests.

Registration deadlines:

  • for DiverseScholar postdocs traveling by plane: Friday June 28
  • for PhD trainees traveling by car (lunch headcount): Monday July 15
  • onsite registration (space permitting) but no lunch guarantee!

Registration rates for Recruiters, Faculty, Administrators, Staff, Exhibitors, etc except where indicated for PhD trainees. The latter's registration does not include evening meals.
