Advancing Faculty Diversity Cluster Hire
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) seeks outstanding candidates who will provide intellectual leadership in any field of Ocean, Solid Earth, and Atmospheric Science and whose research programs address how global change, climate change, and natural and environmental hazards amplify existing human vulnerabilities and injustices associated with African American and Black Diaspora communities.
UC San Diego is forging a new path for engagement and collaboration between STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences and the Social Sciences/Arts & Humanities. The ladder-rank faculty position at SIO is one of ten such positions that seek to unite STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences departments and African American and the Black Diaspora Studies through innovative research, coordinated teaching and mentoring, and targeted service. Potential areas of research include racial disparities in the impacts of climate change and variability, natural hazards, pollution, ecosystem changes and food security. Candidates can also highlight their own research on issues of racial diversity and inclusion within their scientific communities. Faculty holding these positions are expected to teach a combination of traditional science courses in their field and courses aligned with the undergraduate African American Studies Minor (AASM). Alternatively, they should demonstrate the equivalent through service to the AASM and by mentoring AASM undergraduate students. Through the materials submitted with their applications, candidates will also be evaluated on their potential to establish a research, teaching, and service portfolio that advances anti-racism, anti-oppression, and equity with particular focus on African America and Black Diaspora communities.
