Tufts University

Postdoctoral Scholar Training for Academic Careers in Biomedical Research

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

We would like to tell you about an exciting postdoctoral training program at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. This program, called Tufts IRACDA (Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Awards Program), is funded by the IRACDA mechanism of NIH-NIGMS. Tufts IRACDA is designed to prepare postdoctoral trainees for the multiple demands of an academic career in biomedical research. Scholars spend on average 75% of their time conducting research and 25% of their time in career development activities. Research opportunities are available in a wide range of biomedical research disciplines. Scholars develop teaching skills through a semester-long mentored teaching assignment at a minority-serving institution in the Boston area. The training is further supplemented by workshops on essential skills such as grant and manuscript writing, mentoring, lab management, scientific presentations, and inclusive teaching strategies. The training components are sequenced to allow scholars to balance the activities and to build on previous experiences. IRACDA scholars receive up to four years of salary support and a travel and supply allowance. They complete the program ready to manage a successful research program and balance the multi-faceted demands inherent in a career as an academic scientist. Annual salary levels match the NIH postdoctoral stipend levels.
