Postdoctoral Research in Modeling Stellar Populations in Galaxies- #0004502

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Claus Leitherer and a team of US and international collaborators on models of stellar populations in galaxies.

This research will include the development of a new generation of population synthesis models for star-forming galaxies using the Starburst99 software. The project is aimed at understanding the photometric and spectroscopic properties of galaxies at any redshift using data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and other observatories.

The successful applicant will benefit from the career mentoring program at STScI, interactions with the Johns Hopkins University research staff, and a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in summer 2022, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal for a third year, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D.

Any questions about the position should be directed to Claus Leitherer (leitherer@stsci.edu).

Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) UV/optical spectroscopy and photometry; (b) data analysis from space-based observatories; (c) studies of star-forming galaxies; (d) programing in a Linux environment. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.

Applications must be submitted thru this link: stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/65091

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a concise (1-3 page) statement of research interests, accomplishments, and relevant technical experience. Complete applications received by February 18, 2022 will receive full consideration. Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference. Reference letters must be submitted by the same date via the on-line application system.

Questions regarding the application process can be sent directly to careers@stsci.edu.
