The Center for Computational Biology has both overarching and smaller-scale interests: Development of computational methods, for solving forward problems (evolutionary dynamics of biophysical systems) using cutting edge methods, and for data analysis of large-dimensional data (machine learning, inference, etc); Regulatory and genetic networks; Integrating multi-modal data (e.g. light microscopy with tomography with dynamical models or multi-modal molecular and clinical data integration via machine learning approaches) in mathematical and statistical models to understand, for example, the course and regulation of development. The structure of proteins via modelling, electron microscopy and tomography, their interaction networks, and their dynamics. Methods for coarse-graining and analysis of complex biological systems. Increasing interest in physiological modeling.
The Center for Computational Biology invites applications for a postdoctoral Flatiron Research Fellowship for the Study of Living Materials. The selected candidate will work in either, or both, of the following areas:
- Developing new algorithms for the aLENS software suite, such as for simulating deformable filaments and boundaries, data-driven motor/crosslinker models, and hydrodynamic interactions between filaments and boundaries.
- Exploring the physical properties of active materials built from cytoskeletal motors/crosslinkers and filaments, with a particular focus on the interplay between microscopic ordering of filaments, the motion of motors/crosslinkers, and macroscopic dynamics; the relation between constitutive laws and motor behaviors in cytoskeletal active materials, and predictive design of cytoskeletal active materials.
Flatiron Research Fellows (FRF) positions are initially two-year appointments, renewable for a third year contingent upon performance. Flatiron Research Fellows will report to research scientists, group leaders, or the Center Director, as appropriate. Fellows must be capable of carrying out research independently while also collaborating with other researchers at CCB and throughout the Flatiron Institute. FRF's are expected to participate in the Institute's vibrant activities such as workshops and seminars, and mentoring students through our various internship programs. They are also expected to disseminate their results through scientific publication, conferences, and/or software distribution. Fellows will have access to the Flatiron Institute's powerful scientific computing resources.
The position is based in our New York City offices. Fellows may be eligible for subsidized housing within walking distance of the Institute.
- Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, statistics, computational biology, computational biophysics, computer science, engineering, mathematics physics, or related disciplines or, if selected, will have received their PhD before the start of the FRF appointment.
Related Skills & Other Requirements
- For expected work on algorithm development: Experience/proficiency in one or more of C++ and parallel computing using MPI/OpenMP, computational physics or mechanics, and PDE numerical solvers, constrained optimization, or data-driven models
- For expected work on the physical properties of active materials built from cytoskeletal motor/crosslinkers and filaments, expertise in one or more of the following: Continuum/fluid/solid/liquid-crystal mechanics, theoretical biophysics, cytoskeletal systems, or active materials; PDE or data-driven models; ability to conduct simulations and process large amounts of data
- Ability to work well in an interdisciplinary environment, and to collaborate with experimentalists
- Strong oral and written communication, data documentation, and presentation skills
- Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills.
