Chemistry and Chemical Biology

Position Summary: The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in the College of Science at Northeastern University is seeking candidates for two tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in academic year 2021-2022. Exceptional senior candidates will be considered for appointment at higher ranks. Joint or affiliated appointments with other departments may be possible. Appointments will have the opportunity to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams across the University and will complement existing strengths. One position is in the field of Analytical Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry with a research focus on plastics. Study of environmental plastics is advancing by applying analytical chemistry and imaging to resolve the size classes, chemistries, and impact of plastics and their byproducts. Candidates are sought who study plastics or their byproducts in natural, engineered, or biological samples. A second position is in the fields of carbon neutral and carbon negative technologies as applied to sustainable energy and materials. Responsibilities: Potential hires are expected to develop vigorous research programs cross cutting the fields of chemistry, chemical biology, environmental science, energy storage, and/or materials science. Faculty members at Northeastern are expected to develop independent research programs that attract external funding; teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate level; supervise students and postdocs in their area of research; and participate in service to the department, university, and discipline.

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (“CCB”) includes 27 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 30% of whom are women; nine full-time teaching faculty; four research faculty; and eight affiliated faculty. CCB was recognized as the most gender diverse faculty among the top 50 US Chemistry Departments in 2019. CCB enrolls approximately 150 undergraduate majors; 27 M.S. and PlusOne (BS/MS) students; and 80 Ph.D. students.
