Neurotologist Surgeon Scientist for Senior Investigator

The Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), located in Bethesda, MD, is seeking a tenure eligible Neurotologist-Surgeon Scientist to lead a Neurotology Branch of neurotologist-surgeon scientists and audiologists, and to establish an independent translational and clinical research program in hearing and/or balance. The Neurotology Branch (NOB), NIDCD, conducts (1) basic and clinical research on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of hearing impairment and tinnitus and disturbance of balance caused by such common but inadequately understood problems as hereditary hearing impairment, Meniere's disease, sudden deafness, immune disorders of the inner ear, perilymphatic fistulate, otosclerosis, otitis media, and ototoxicity; and (2) conducts controlled, randomized clinical trials of promising new therapeutic strategies, including medical, biologic, gene and surgical therapies.

We welcome applications from candidates with clinical and translational laboratory research interests in disorders affecting NIDCD’s mission areas of hearing and balance. Preference will be given to candidates whose research or approaches complement those of our existing strong programs in genetics, cell biology, immunology, and clinical research. The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of scientists and clinicians at the forefront of research on communication disorders.

The NIDCD offers an excellent working environment including well equipped basic and clinical research laboratories, genomic, audiology, imaging, and flow cytometry core facilities; state of the art clinic, testing and inpatient units in the NIH Clinical Center; and numerous opportunities for collaboration. The position includes a generous start-up allowance, recently renovated research and office space, laboratory resources, and positions for personnel and trainees.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess an M.D., be board-eligible or board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, have postdoctoral experience,
  • Subspecialty fellowship training in Neurotologic surgery,
  • Record of outstanding publications in hearing or balance, and evidence of national recognition.

Salary is commensurate with training and relevant research experience. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available for this position.
