Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

Research Associate (LAr TPC Neutrino)

Scientific Computing Division

We Are

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (known as Fermilab) is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

The Scientific Computing Division seeks outstanding applicants for a postdoctoral Research Associate position working on neutrino experiments that use liquid argon time projection chambers (LAr TPC).

Fermilab has a strong and diverse research program in neutrino physics and an extensive array of LAr TPC experiments. Fermilab is the home of the Short Baseline Neutrino program and the host lab for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). As the successful candidate, you will conduct physics research and publish analysis of neutrino detector data on a topic of your choice.

In parallel to physics analysis, you will bring your physics expertise and learn from a team of world-leading HEP computing experts and extreme-scale computing experts from the DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program to gain expertise in modern software development. You will research portability solutions that enable LAr TPC physicists to develop efficient algorithmic code that can run simultaneously on CPUs and a variety of compute accelerators like GPUs.

The position is for a period of up to three (3) years with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, or related field by the time of the appointment.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishments in experimental physics.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, including ability to present at scientific conferences and record of publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in scientific computing for physics experiments. Experience in the area of scientific software frameworks, algorithm development, or simulation in C++ or a similar programming language is a plus but not required.

You Will

  • Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.
  • Abide by and be responsible for performing all activities in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices.
  • Work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment respecting and building upon the contributions of others.
