Diversity Bloggers
The ScienceOnline 2011 conference and the 25th anniversary of MLK Day inspired us to compile this list of diversity bloggers (*). These are authored by STEM Ph.D. students/professionals who are (1) members of underrepresented groups and/or (2) allies writing about underrepresented groups such as women, people of color, LGBTQ, disability, etc. We also include some non-STEM writers who have a rich perspective on academic life. This roster is a work in progress and therefore not comprehensive.
The blogs below are in chronological order to showcase the early adopters. Authors are only identified by their pseudonyms, unless their names are published in their blog bio. We notice that some bloggers are switching to Twitter for their primary communication channel so we are updating this page with those usernames. Please submit comments about this page to . We would especially appreciate suggestions of missing blogs to include.
Below we highlight notable posts that we find interesting for their newsworthiness.

Diversity in Science Blog Carnival [top]
A carnival is one blog post organized by a rotating editor who collects writings, links, photos, etc. submitted on a central theme. Danielle Lee initiated the Diversity in Science (DiS) carnival in 2009.
- Published carnival editions
- Edition topics for a particular ethnic/gender/etc community
- 2012 carnival calendar
- Notes for carnival hosts
2012 calendar of carnival themes is below. Peruse the past carnival editions below for submission ideas. There is also a suggested topic list of submissions for each theme. Note to established bloggers, your submission can be an old posting; but, please do not submit a post that has been used in previous carnivals. If you are interested in hosting a DiS carnival, please contact Dr. Danielle Lee at @DNLee5 or .

- your suggestions…
Notes for carnival hosts:
- Publicize the carnival using multiple channels: Twitter, emails, etc. Use this shortened link (http://is.gd/DiScarnival) if you want to save characters when directing back to this archive.
- It’s your decision on how strictly to enforce the deadline but note that there may be stragglers submitting late.
- Note the carnival edition number.
- Get started reading submissions early to help you figure out which entries you will include and how each will be introduced. Publishing on a Monday is recommended since it is best for online traffic, sharing, and gives time for slackers writing on the weekend.
- Link the main blog/website and separately the article submitted. Include a little tidbit about the piece.
- Splash a photo or something to make the post dynamic.
- Here’s the link to a high-resolution DiS carnival badge.
Please link it back to this MinorityPostdoc.org carnival archive:
http://www.minoritypostdoc.org/view/bloggers.html#carnival - End the carnival with an announcement of the next edition number, topic, and the hosting blog site.
- Feel free to contact Danielle Lee (@DNLee5) for feedback.
- Finally, we thank you immensely for contributing to diversity in online science!

Science Blogging Talkfest 2011: Diversity in Science Online
* We use a loose definition of “bloggers” to mean an individual who writes regularly online using either a “traditional” publisher or on their own using a modern blogging service. If an institutional blog has only one posting on diversity, then we will place that link on our Articles page.
