New York University: Inaugural Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering

Tandon School of Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the New York University (NYU) Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a tenured Full Professor and Inaugural Department Chair, to begin September 1, 2019. NYU established this new department to develop collaborative research and educational programs between its engineering and medical schools. NYU is one of the top private universities in the United States, and our School of Medicine is ranked third by US News.

With NYU's unrivaled global network of campuses, we promote a truly inclusive engineering education. We are deeply committed to teaching and learning. We are dedicated to quality, integrity, and mutual respect. We value and take pride in our high proportion of female students and students who are the first in their families to go to college. We seek faculty with a passion for a culturally diverse environment. Tandon belongs to the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches.

Our mission is to excel in research, teaching and entrepreneurship. We aim to inspire and educate engineers for the 21st century by encouraging interdisciplinary research, supporting collaborations with other schools, universities and industry, and by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship via business incubators.

Our students at all levels engage in projects leading to new engineering approaches and technologies to promote human health. Biomedical Engineering is inherently multidisciplinary, and our department reflects that breadth in its faculty, educational programs, and research. Our department offers MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering. We will develop undergraduate programs in the future. We lead and have ties to multidisciplinary centers and research programs in optical and radiological imaging, tissue engineering, neuroscience, data science, systems genetics, and major medical research departments including Radiology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Urology, among others.

We anticipate growth in the department, with multiple areas of specialization. You should have a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline. We seek individuals who have a strong record of scholarship, leadership, curricular innovation, entrepreneurship, and an excellent funding record. The Department Chair will play a key leadership role in advancing the new department, and should have the collaborative style, interpersonal skills and organizational abilities to captain this effort.
